Aizu Kiri Geta — The Story Behind Japan's Most Beloved Wooden Sandals

There is a particular sound that belongs only to summer in Japan — the rhythmic karan koron of wooden geta on stone pavement. It echoes through festival nights, along temple paths, and down quiet neighborhood streets. It is the sound of a living tradition.

At NAMBA SHOUTEN, we recently acquired a rare pair of unused deadstock geta from the Showa era — crafted from Aizu paulownia wood (会津桐), fitted with a vivid red hanao, and never once worn. This is their story.

What Makes Aizu Kiri Special?

Aizu (会津), a mountainous region in Fukushima Prefecture, has been celebrated for centuries as one of Japan's finest sources of kiri — paulownia wood. The cold climate and rich soil of the Aizu basin produce timber with an exceptionally fine, straight grain, low density, and natural resistance to moisture and warping.

For geta craftsmen, Aizu kiri is the gold standard. Its lightness makes it comfortable to wear for hours. Its insulating properties keep feet cool in summer and warm in cooler months. And its soft, pale surface develops a beautiful patina over time — a quality prized by those who understand the value of natural materials.

This pair carries an Aizu kiri stamp on the base — a mark of regional provenance that was common on quality geta during the Showa era, and increasingly rare to find today.

The Nimaiba — Two-Tooth Construction

These geta are built in the classic nimaiba (二枚歯) style — two raised teeth carved directly from the same block of paulownia wood as the base. This single-piece construction is a hallmark of traditional Japanese craftsmanship: no glue, no fasteners, just the integrity of the wood itself.

The two-tooth design elevates the foot approximately 3.8 cm (1.5 in) off the ground, keeping the hem of a yukata or kimono clean while naturally encouraging an upright posture. Walking in nimaiba geta engages the entire foot — heel, arch, and toe — in a way that flat footwear simply cannot replicate.

The Red Hanao — A Statement in Scarlet

The hanao — the thong strap that holds the foot to the base — is as much a style choice as a functional one. In Japan, the color and material of the hanao has long communicated something about the wearer: their age, occasion, and aesthetic sensibility.

Red hanao, like those on this pair, are traditionally associated with young women and festive occasions — summer festivals, shrine visits, and the vibrant energy of Showa-era street life. Against the pale, unfinished surface of the Aizu kiri base, the scarlet strap is striking.

Deadstock — Worn by No One, Waiting for You

What makes this pair truly exceptional is its condition. These geta were made during the Showa era, stored, and never worn. The teeth show no wear. The base is unmarked. The hanao retains its original form.

Over decades of storage, the paulownia surface has developed a soft whitish bloom — a natural oxidation that is entirely characteristic of unfinished kiri wood, and considered by many collectors to be part of its beauty. The metal hardware on the underside shows minor paint loss, consistent with age.
