This is a Tonbi mantle from Japan that developed uniquely in the 1920s–1930s.
While it traces its roots to the Scottish Inverness coat, it was reinterpreted in Japan to match local lifestyles and traditional kimono culture. At the time, it was a special outer garment that only a select gentlemanly class was permitted to wear.

This particular piece is distinguished by its simple design without a fur collar.
Unlike the more showy fur‑collared versions, the all‑black wool construction gives a quieter, more urban impression.

Beyond the Tonbi mantle’s characteristic sleeveless cape structure, the front body is designed like a vest.
This allows the wearer to pass their arms inside and reach pockets, adding practical usability to a dramatic form.
