The Japanese national uniform — kokumin-fuku — was introduced in 1940 as a standardized civilian garment for wartime Japan. It was not military issue, but it was designed to reflect military efficiency: simple, practical, and made to last. Most examples from this period did not survive the postwar decades. Cotton was scarce, conditions were hard, and what remained was repurposed or discarded. A wearable example from the 1940s is now genuinely rare.

For collectors of Japanese pre-war and wartime material culture, or for anyone drawn to the visual language of 20th-century workwear and utilitarian design, this jacket represents a direct connection to a specific and unrepeatable moment in Japanese history. It cannot be reproduced. The supply is what it is: what survived, survived. There is nothing else.
