A pair of 1990s Levi’s 501 jeans made in the USA.

Beautiful whisker fading (hige) and honeycomb fading (hachinosu) gives this pair the character of a wearable art piece: a denim surface shaped by time and wear, rather than a uniform finish.

Manufactured in December 1993 at the San Angelo factory in the United States, this vintage pair was originally handled by Levi’s Japan. Its internal label retains Japanese care instructions and the name Levi Strauss Japan K.K.

The fading is the defining feature. Horizontal whiskers (hige) cross the waist and upper thighs, giving way to pale blue through the thighs and knees. Darker indigo remains around the pockets, seams and lower legs, while honeycomb fading (hachinosu) marks the backs of the knees. These contrasts bring depth to a simple outfit.

The actual waist measures 80 cm (31.50 in), with an 85 cm (33.46 in) inseam and a 19 cm (7.48 in) hem width measured flat. The proportions and remaining leg length are part of this pair’s appeal. The label reads W33 L36, but this is not its current measured size: please use the measurements below.

Condition — Please Read Before Ordering

Fading, abrasion and stains are present throughout. The rear pockets have wear and fraying, with a tear below the right rear pocket exposing the pocket lining. The fabric across the seat has become thin.

The crotch and inner-leg seams and the buttonhole areas show abrasion and fraying. Both hems have wear, tears and loose threads. The waist patch is cracked, partly missing and has faded lettering. The red tab is missing.

There are no repairs. The hems appear not to have been shortened, but this cannot be confirmed.

We have washed this pair twice. A slight residual odor, thought to be associated with body oils and protein residue, remains. Please consider this carefully if you are sensitive to odors.

An irregular stamp is present on the pocket lining. The original reason for this classification and any connection to the missing red tab are unknown.

Because the fabric is thin and torn in places, damage may worsen with wear or washing. Handle gently and avoid excessive strain or friction. This is a worn vintage item, not a pair in pristine condition.
