In the Taisho to early Showa period, when Western clothing was still uncommon in Japan, men wore heavy black wool mantles over kimono.

Associated with students, teachers, and urban workers, this style evokes bankara: a rugged, intellectual, and quietly rebellious aesthetic rooted in Japan’s early modern student culture. It was not exclusively a student uniform, but part of a wider moment when traditional Japanese dress and Western outerwear existed side by side.

Cut without sleeves, this mantle wraps the body in a generous sweep of wool. Its curved hem and deep drape shift with movement, creating a sculptural silhouette that feels remarkably relevant to contemporary designer and avant-garde fashion.

The restrained black fabric allows volume, weight, and movement to become the design. Wear it over a white T-shirt and minimal trousers, or combine it with wide-leg pants and boots for a more dramatic silhouette. It can also be layered over kimono and other Japanese garments, closer to its original historical context.

Estimated to date from the Taisho to early Showa era, this is a rare surviving example of prewar Japanese outerwear. Its age-related marks and missing components remain part of its history. This one-of-a-kind mantle cannot be restocked.

Age-related surface marks, small particles, and pale marks are visible throughout the wool.

The front buttons are mismatched, and one button is missing. One side of the neck hook is also missing, so the hook cannot currently be fastened.

A hood attachment cord remains beneath the collar, but the hood itself is not included.
