A fragile textile witness from the final years of the Edo period.

This triangular Japanese textile flag bears a hand-inked inscription dated Keio 1 (1865), July 5, placing it at the end of the Edo period. Its vivid fabric, two applied family crests, and extensive age-related wear give it a powerful presence that cannot be recreated.

The inscription reads: “Keio 1, July 5 – Shaku Gyokuro Doji – Chojiya Kinshichi.” The prefix “Shaku” may indicate a Buddhist posthumous name, suggesting that the flag could have been made for memorial or devotional use. Historical flags also served different functions, including portable identification banners, so the exact purpose remains open to interpretation.

Rather than presenting one unverified answer, this textile preserves the questions of its own history. The damage, staining, worn areas, and fragile hand-stitched construction are part of the object itself, carrying the weight of more than 160 years.
