This triangular cloth flag is an exceptionally rare historical textile, bearing a hand-inked inscription dated Keio 1 (1865), July 5, on the reverse side—crafted at the end of the Edo period.

Featuring an impressive visual presence, the piece is made from vivid fabric and decorated with applied crests (kamon) in two different designs.

The back side includes the inscription:
“Keio 1, July 5 – Shaku Gyokuro Doji – Chojiya Kinshichi.”

The use of the prefix “Shaku” suggests a Buddhist posthumous name (homyo/kaimyo), indicating that this may have been created for memorial or devotional purposes, possibly as an object of remembrance or prayer.

Since flags of the time were sometimes used as sashimono (portable battle or identification banners), multiple interpretations of its function remain possible.

Regardless of the exact purpose, this piece reflects an intense personal sentiment and stands as an artifact of deep historical value—important for research into late-Edo folk culture, regional history, and religious practices.

Although heavily deteriorated, the damage itself embodies the weight of 160 years of time, contributing to its powerful presence as an object of study or art.
