A furoshiki that has survived the decades without being used.

This cotton furoshiki dates to around the mid-Showa period. It is unused and has never been washed. After years in storage, the fabric still has a lightly starched body and a subtle sheen. Part of what appears to be its original price sticker remains on the white name cloth sewn into one corner, another trace of its unused past. Those details make this deadstock piece distinctive.

Bands of fine, pale and purplish stripes run across a brown ground. Japanese vintage textiles are drawing interest overseas not only for their patterns, but also for the culture of using cloth for years in everyday life. A furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth: it adapts to what it holds and folds away when not in use. This one can wrap gifts or clothing, or be displayed to show its pattern. Using a cloth again and again instead of disposable wrapping also speaks to slow fashion and intentional living.

We recommend it to textile collectors, people who would like to use it with Japanese dress, and those looking for material for sewing or remaking.

Condition

Unused, but this is an old textile that has been stored for many years. It has a small hole, areas where the weave has shifted, and fraying along the edges. Part of what appears to be a price sticker remains on the name cloth. Washing may weaken the fabric further, enlarge existing holes or damage, or cause it to split or tear. Please order only if you understand and accept the condition of this vintage fabric and the risk of deterioration from washing. Please check the photos as well. It will be shipped compressed, so creases may occur.
