This is a double-layered Kendo gi jacket (uwagi) originally made for Kendo training.

The fabric is cotton, constructed with a double-layer structure that gives it substantial thickness and durability, reflecting the highly practical nature of traditional martial arts wear.

The indigo-dyed fabric shows a deep, rich tone, combined with natural fading and wear developed over years of use.
Thanks to the double-layer construction, the reverse side also reveals a distinctive texture and character.
The different expressions of indigo on the front and back are one of the defining features of double-layer Kendo jackets.

Dating from approximately the Showa to Heisei period (circa mid–late 20th century), this piece carries a background very different from modern fashion garments.
It is recommended for those who value the material itself, its history, and the story embedded in the fabric.

In recent years, Japanese vintage Kendo wear and martial arts–derived textiles have gained growing attention overseas, particularly within the contexts of textile archiving, slow fashion, and upcycling.
The depth of indigo dye and the weight and texture unique to double-layer construction are especially appreciated, as they cannot be replicated in mass-produced items.

Condition

There are various signs of wear, including stains, damage, and fraying consistent with age and use.
The tag has mostly detached and is nearly missing.

This is a vintage item. Please refrain from purchasing if you are not comfortable with aged textiles.

The item has been washed twice by us.
