Japan's fire brigades were reorganized into guard teams in 1939 and effectively ceased to exist. What they wore before that point — the uniforms, the insignia, the structure of the garment itself — was never reproduced, because there was no longer anyone to wear it. This jacket was made for the leader of one of those brigades, sometime in the 1920s to 1930s. The black wool, the military-adjacent cut, the evidence of removed armbands: all of it places this within a specific institutional world that no longer exists.
Fire brigade leaders occupied a defined social role in Meiji and Taisho-era Japan. The jacket reflects that: it was made to be recognized, to convey authority within a community. It did that job. Now it is one of the very few pieces of its kind that left that world intact enough to be held.
