Made in the early Showa era, sewn by hand in an ordinary household somewhere in Tohoku. The exterior is a quiet pinstripe cotton — the kind of garment that asks nothing of the world.

Turn it inside out, and everything changes.

Butterflies. Everywhere. The entire body lining is covered in them — large, bold, impossible to ignore. The sleeves are lined in a completely different fabric, a fine komon pattern. Two textiles that have no business being together, combined by someone with no formal training and every reason to keep things simple. They didn’t.

This crazy pattern lining is not a detail. It is the whole point of this haori.

A haori with two completely different faces is exceptionally rare in the Japan vintage market. Collectors and stylists across Europe and North America are increasingly drawn to pieces like this — garments where the hidden interior tells a story the exterior never could. Cotton, hand-sewn, one of a kind. No fast fashion label could ever produce something like it.

Worn open over a white tee and slacks, it reads as a quiet, considered layering piece. The crazy pattern lining catches the light as you move — a flash of butterflies and komon that speaks for itself. Layer it over an all-black outfit and let the lining do the talking.
