In the rural villages of Japan, cotton threads were carefully resist-dyed and woven by hand — one thread at a time — into kasuri fabric that accompanied everyday life. The subtle bleeding and shifting of the pattern, impossible to replicate by machine, is the very soul of kasuri. It is why collectors and slow fashion lovers around the world are drawn to this cloth today.

This is a cotton kasuri kimono from the early Showa era (circa 1920s–1930s). At some point in its long life, someone removed the sleeves. We don't know who, or why. But the result is a silhouette that feels remarkably modern — a long sleeveless vest that layers effortlessly over contemporary clothing, as if it were always meant to be worn this way.
