A large unstitched futon-gawa (布団皮) from early-to-mid Showa-era Japan, woven in a striking plaid of black, khaki, burgundy, grey, and white. Multiple panels are seamed together in the traditional way, and visible patch repairs tell the story of a household that refused to waste. In Japanese textile culture, this practice is known as boro (襤褸) — the philosophy of mending, of finding beauty in imperfection, of making things last.

Today, authentic boro textiles are actively collected by interior designers, textile artists, and slow fashion advocates across Europe and North America. This is not a reproduction. This is the real thing — born from everyday Japanese life.

Hang it as a wall tapestry. Drape it as a table cloth. Use it as a room divider. Cut it as a source fabric for your own creative work. However it finds its next life, it carries the quiet history of a Japanese home with it.

■ Condition

This is a vintage item with visible signs of use. Staining and hand-applied patch repairs are present and are considered part of the textile's history and character.

We have laundered this item twice before shipping. Please note that a faint vintage odor may remain — we recommend airing before use. Once the item has been washed or used after delivery, we are unable to accept returns or exchanges. Please order only if you understand and accept the condition of vintage goods.
