The upper half blazes in vivid red-ground plaid. The lower half settles into a deep navy-based check. Sewn together into a single sheet, this crazy-pattern textile is the physical embodiment of Showa-era Japan’s “waste nothing” philosophy.

A futon cover, or futon-gawa, is the large outer cotton shell that wraps a traditional Japanese futon. Long before upcycling became a trend, Japanese households pieced together worn kimono fabric, remnants, and offcuts to create these covers, out of respect for cloth and the hands that made it. This two-panel piece is a rare example of that mingei spirit made tangible.
