There are garments made to be worn, and there are garments made to be seen. This haori belongs to the second category.

The outer fabric — a blended textile from the mid-Showa period (1950s–1960s) — has aged significantly. There is wear, fraying, and tearing throughout. The fabric is fragile. This piece is not suitable for wearing.

But turn it over, and you find the reason it exists: a lining depicting sparrows and flowers in the refined, hand-painted style of Showa-era Japanese textile art. The composition is balanced. The colors are still vivid. The motifs — small birds, blossoms, the quiet world of a Japanese garden — are rendered with a delicacy that no contemporary reproduction can replicate.

This is the principle of ura-masari: the inside surpasses the outside. The most remarkable things need not announce themselves.

Collectors of Japanese textile art, kimono enthusiasts, and interior designers across Europe and North America actively seek pieces like this — not to wear, but to frame, to display, to study. The lining of a Showa-era haori is a primary document of Japanese aesthetic culture. This one is exceptional.

Washed twice. A vintage scent remains.
Shipped compressed. Returns and exchanges not accepted. Please order only if you fully understand and accept the condition of this piece.
