■ Product Details ■

・Era: Taisho to Early Showa period (approx. 1910s–1930s)
・Material: Cotton

A cape that has traveled through time — and it is here, now.

Dochu-kappa (道中合羽) is a traditional Japanese travel garment with roots in the Edo period. Worn by travelers, merchants, and craftsmen as they walked the highways of Japan, it served as protection against rain, wind, and dust. This particular piece quietly guarded someone's back during the Taisho to early Showa era — a time when Japan was alive with the romance of modernization and the beauty of its own tradition.

The vertically striped cotton fabric is honest and strong — the kind of cloth that everyday people wore with quiet dignity. The aesthetic carries the refined elegance of Taisho Roman (大正ロマン): a uniquely Japanese blend of Western influence and Eastern sensibility, where beauty lived in restraint.

The brown collar, the remaining fastener, the full-circle silhouette — every detail speaks to the careful craftsmanship of its era.

Long before fast fashion existed, clothing was not replaced — it was repaired, worn again, and kept. The wear and damage on this cape are not flaws. They are layers of memory, accumulated slowly over a century of use. This is slow fashion in its most original form.

Draped over a modern coat or jacket, this cape commands attention. Hung on a wall, it transforms a room. Wear it or display it — either way, it belongs.

Japan vintage is having a moment. Collectors and buyers from Europe and North America are seeking pieces like this — rare, handmade, rooted in a culture of craft and longevity. Among them, dochu-kappa are among the most elusive.

One of a kind. There will never be another.
