Dating from the Taisho to early Showa period, this is a true Bankara mantle that preserves the atmosphere of an era when Japanese and Western clothing met.

Bankara refers to a distinctive aesthetic associated with the student culture of early modern Japan: rugged and rebellious, yet deeply intellectual. With its undecorated black wool and bold volume, this mantle strongly embodies that spirit.

Condition

There is damage around the neck hook. Two buttons are missing, and the lining also shows damage. There is an area around the shoulder that appears frayed.

On the reverse, there is a trace where what appears to have been a name label was removed. Buttons for attaching a hood remain on the reverse of the collar, but the hood itself is not included.
