This is a rare Japanese vintage Bankara mantle with the atmosphere of Taisho Roman.

Found in Tohoku, Japan, this mantle was made to order for an individual client who commissioned it from a tailor of the period. The mismatched front buttons, the later-added brown fur collar, and the traces of previous ownership all reveal a garment made for one person rather than mass production. These personal details give it the weight and presence of a finely made vintage garment with a history of its own.

When the later-added fur collar is lifted slightly, the original velvet collar appears beneath it. The reverse of the original collar reveals beautiful machine stitching and ties for attaching a later hood. The garment therefore preserves several layers of time: its original tailor-made construction, a later custom alteration, and the marks left by the people who owned and wore it.

For a modern mode look, wear it over a white T-shirt or a high-neck knit with black trousers. The broad silhouette works especially well with wide-leg pants, while slim trousers or a long skirt create a sharper contrast with the mantle’s volume. Condition

This is an old vintage garment with stains, signs of wear, and age-related deterioration.

There is damage and previous repair work around the neck hooks. The front buttons have been replaced over time and do not match in color or shape. The bottom button is missing. The buttonholes and lining also show damage.

The fur collar was added at a later date. The fabric on the reverse of the fur collar has deteriorated, and the collar would need to be unstitched if removed. The original velvet collar remains underneath.

This garment has the natural signs of age and a vintage storage odor.
