Woven sometime between the early and mid-Showa era, this cotton fabric was sewn into a futon by someone in an ordinary Japanese household, not a factory or a machine. A person chose this fabric, cut it, and stitched it by hand. That is why no two pieces like this exist.

The colourway is striking: rust red, olive green, cream, and mauve, four tones crossing in a bold plaid that feels as considered as any textile design today.

The needle holes, remaining threads, and traces of cotton batting are not flaws. They are evidence that this fabric lived.

Among textile artists, boro collectors, and slow-living communities in Europe and North America, demand for this kind of Japanese vintage cotton has grown steadily.
