Before fast fashion and disposable textiles, there was futon-gawa, the outer fabric of a traditional Japanese cotton futon, hand-sewn by ordinary people in ordinary homes.

This cloth was made by someone's hands, used through seasons, and eventually unstitched with care. The cotton batting was removed and the fabric returned to what it always was: cloth, ready for another life.

This panel is one of two pieces unstitched from the same futon. Its rust red, olive green, cream, and brown plaid is not a designer pattern. It is the quiet aesthetic of Showa-era domestic life, from early-to-mid 20th-century Japan, when beauty lived in everyday objects.

The needle holes, remaining threads, and traces of cotton batting are not flaws to conceal. They are evidence that this fabric lived.

Condition

This fabric has been unstitched from a vintage Japanese futon. Needle holes, remaining thread, and traces of cotton batting are present. Please refer to the photos for details.

Washed twice by hand. A faint vintage scent may remain, as is natural with antique textiles. Any damage or odour that occurs after washing or use following purchase is not eligible for return or exchange. Please order only if you understand and accept these conditions.

The item will be compressed for shipping. Some creasing may occur.
