This is a rare Japanese vintage Inverness Coat / Tonbi Mantle exuding the romantic style of the Taisho era. Crafted from high-quality wool, it has a soft, supple texture and a calm, elegant appearance.

The Inverness Coat originally originated in the UK as a coat for warmth and rain protection, featuring a cape-like design that extends from the shoulders to the arms. In Japan, this design came to be known as the "Tonbi Mantle" because its silhouette resembles a hawk (tonbi) spreading its wings.

In Japan, it was adopted as practical outerwear from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period. During the Taisho era, it was especially popular as a sophisticated coat that complemented both Western and Japanese clothing styles. The relaxed silhouette of the Tonbi Mantle creates an elegant and composed impression simply by wearing it.

The most distinctive feature of this piece is its color. Most Tonbi Mantles are black, but this one comes in a muted salmon-pink tone, a very rare shade. Its subdued, mature color makes it a truly one-of-a-kind garment that you are unlikely to encounter again.
