Era: Early to Mid Showa Period (approx. 1930s–1950s)
Material: Cotton
Origin: Tohoku, Japan
Born in the farmlands of Tohoku, this is a piece that has traveled through time to reach you.
Navy cotton with fine vertical stripes, entirely hand-sewn from start to finish — every stitch a testament to the skill and patience of the women who wore and worked in these pants generations ago. No machines. No shortcuts. Just needle, thread, and a lifetime of craft.
What is Mompe?
Mompe are traditional Japanese work pants worn by rural women, particularly in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. Designed for freedom of movement in the fields and mountains, their wide, tapered silhouette and adjustable tie waist make them adaptable to any body — something no mass-produced garment can replicate.
During World War II, the Japanese government issued a formal directive encouraging women to wear mompe as practical daily wear. After the war, as Western fashion swept through Japan, mompe quietly disappeared from everyday life. What remains today carries the warmth and memory of the people who lived in them.
These are not just vintage pants. They are folk artifacts.
For Those Who Live Close to the Land
If you grow your own food, work with your hands, or are drawn to a slower, more intentional way of living — mompe were made for you.
Choosing a garment like this is a quiet act of resistance against fast fashion. It is a commitment to real materials, real craft, and real longevity. This piece once supported someone's working life. We hope it finds its way into yours.

Also Ideal as Remake Fabric
The cotton retains excellent body and structure. The navy stripe remains rich and largely unfaded. Wear it as-is, or carefully unpick the seams and use the fabric for your own textile or sewing projects. A favorite among makers, artists, and slow fashion enthusiasts.
This is a one-of-a-kind piece. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Condition
Good overall condition. There is an intentional opening at the front crotch area — this is not damage. It is reinforced with bar-tack stitching, indicating it is a deliberate and quite rare structural detail of this garment's original construction.
As with all vintage pieces, please expect minor signs of age consistent with its era. This item is intended for buyers who appreciate and understand the nature of antique textiles.
- Hand-washed twice by us prior to listing
- A faint vintage scent remains, characteristic of aged natural fiber
- All sales are final. We are unable to accept returns or exchanges due to condition, scent, or wear after purchase
