What is Mompe?

Mompe are traditional Japanese work pants worn by rural women, particularly in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. During World War II, the Japanese government issued a formal directive encouraging women to wear mompe as practical daily wear. After the war, as Western fashion swept through Japan, mompe quietly disappeared from everyday life. What remains today carries the warmth and memory of the people who lived in them.
