Some of the most compelling details in old clothing are the ones hidden inside.

Turn these monpe pants inside out and another arrangement of kasuri appears: fine-patterned fabric reinforcing the seat and both knees, with the same fabric used for the pocket bag. Different patterns meet within one garment, giving a practical construction an unexpected visual appeal.

Estimated to date from around the mid-Showa period, this pair is made from indigo-dyed cotton. Monpe are traditional Japanese trousers associated with farming, household tasks, and the movement of daily life. This pair has a roomy shape through the hips and legs, gathered at the ankles with elastic.

Sitting, crouching, kneeling. The placement of the additional fabric connects the construction to those everyday movements. We do not know who made this pair or exactly how it was used. What remains is the combination itself: kasuri on the outside, a different kasuri within, and the quiet pleasure of knowing what is hidden beneath the surface.

This is not a pristine, ready-to-wear pair. There are tears and fraying, the waistband elastic has almost entirely lost its stretch, and sections of the hem stitching leave the ankle elastic exposed. It is best approached as a garment to repair and adapt, rather than one to put on and wear without attention.

Keeping the Fabric’s Story Going

Damage should not be dismissed simply as “character.” But it does not erase the appeal of the cloth or the construction.

Mend the tears. Replace the waistband elastic. Or consider removing the elastic and adjusting the fit and silhouette to suit your own wardrobe. Working with an existing garment offers a hands-on approach to sustainable style: keeping the fabric and details you value in use, rather than replacing the whole piece.

For those drawn to slow fashion, intentional living, and time spent making things, this pair offers both clothing and a creative project. Its connection to Japan’s everyday clothing traditions can continue through your own choices, stitches, and styling.

Japanese vintage everyday clothing has attracted interest among vintage enthusiasts and slow-fashion communities in Europe and North America. This pair’s appeal lies in its particular combination of woven patterns and practical interior details, alongside the opportunity to make it your own.

One pair is available. If the interior kasuri arrangement speaks to you, please review the condition carefully and consider the repair work involved before purchasing.

Styling and Adaptation

After repairing the damaged areas and adjusting the waist, pair these trousers with a plain T-shirt or shirt to let the kasuri and roomy silhouette stand out. A simple sweatshirt or knit also brings this traditional everyday garment into a contemporary wardrobe.

Removing the waist or ankle elastic and resizing or reworking the trousers is another possibility. The interior fabric arrangement can become part of the enjoyment: deciding which details to preserve and how to carry them into the next version of the garment.

Measurements and the resulting silhouette after removing the elastic have not been verified. Any alterations should be planned after examining the actual fabric and construction.

Measurements

  • Waist circumference, moderately stretched: 94 cm / 37.0 in
  • Total length: 89 cm / 35.0 in
  • Inseam: 61 cm / 24.0 in
  • Hem width, measured flat and moderately stretched: 14.5 cm / 5.7 in

The stretched measurements are not maximum-extension measurements. The waistband elastic has almost entirely lost its stretch, so the waist measurement alone does not indicate a secure fit.

Please allow for minor measurement variations and compare with trousers you already own.

Condition

Used vintage condition, with tears, holes, and fraying around some seams. There is also a tear near the crotch seam. Repairs should be considered before wear.

The waistband elastic has almost entirely lost its stretch. The ankle elastic remains functional, but faulty stitching leaves it exposed in places. The exposed elastic can snap if caught or snagged, so care is required. Before continued wear, check the hem stitching and elastic and repair or replace them as needed.

The garment has been washed, but some odor remains. Please take this into consideration if you are sensitive to smells.

Older clothing may have additional small signs of wear or details not noted here. The interior reinforcement is a distinctive construction feature, not a guarantee of the present strength or durability of the garment as a whole.

Recommended for customers comfortable with vintage condition and interested in repair, alteration, or reworking existing clothing.
