Monpe are traditional Japanese work trousers worn by rural women — particularly in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions — for farming and daily life. Cut from sturdy cotton or linen, their relaxed silhouette and tapered ankles were designed for ease of movement in the fields. During wartime, monpe spread across the entire country, becoming deeply woven into the fabric of Showa-era Japanese life. A true folk garment that carries the memory of the land and the people who worked it.

Condition Notes

Some stitch loss at the crotch seam, resulting in a small opening. The waist elastic has deteriorated with age and is fully stretched out — both are reflected in the price. Replace the elastic for an easy restoration, or style with suspenders for a look that suits the rugged, working character of these pants beautifully.

Light soiling consistent with age and use. Washed twice by us prior to listing. A faint vintage scent remains, natural for aged textiles.
