Japanese noragi are rural garments worn for farming, outdoor work, and everyday life. They were not made to look polished. They were made to allow movement, withstand use, and be repaired when the fabric became worn.

Because of this, a noragi often carries traces of the person who wore it. Abrasion, joined panels, and repairs are not simply flaws. They record how the garment was used, cared for, and kept in service.

This is a mid-Showa-era cotton noragi, discovered in the Tohoku region of Japan. Its silhouette is a familiar everyday noragi shape, but the reverse side has a striking combination of fabrics unique to this piece. The body is made from striped cotton, the sleeves are solid navy cotton, and the cuffs are finished with mint-green fabric. Together, these contrasting materials create the defining crazy-pattern lining.

Its appeal is not the uniform perfection of something new. The available fabric was used, different pieces were joined when necessary, and the garment was repaired so it could continue to be worn. The crazy-pattern lining, joined panels, and visible repair marks cannot be reproduced in exactly the same way. They are the character of this one garment.

In today’s international Japanese vintage market, buyers are looking beyond branded clothing to discover rural garments and everyday textiles with a clear connection to Japanese life. The value is not only in what the garment looks like, but also in how it was used, repaired, and preserved.

This noragi also speaks to slow fashion and slow living. Instead of consuming identical garments made in large quantities, it reflects a culture of using available materials and wearing one piece for as long as possible. It will suit customers drawn to weekend gardening, rural living, renovated old houses, and a life closer to the land.

Wear it over a simple T-shirt with track pants, as shown in the model photographs, or pair it with clean, understated modern pieces for contrast. The striped cotton and navy sleeves create a distinctive silhouette without needing additional decoration. As a cotton outer layer, it can also be worn for summer air-conditioning or during the changing seasons.

A noragi with this exact combination of stripes, solid navy sleeves, contrasting cuffs, joined panels, and repairs will not appear again in the same form. Please enjoy it as a one-of-a-kind piece of Japanese vintage clothing carrying the memory of work, place, and everyday life.

Condition

This is an old cotton noragi with damage and repair.

Central damage and repair work are shown in the detail photographs. The reverse-side photographs also show contrasting striped fabrics and a joined section. The garment may also have age-related fabric weakness, fraying, color variation, and irregularities in the original construction.

The garment has been washed twice by us. Due to its age, it retains the characteristic scent of an old textile. It will be folded and compressed for shipping, so creasing may occur.

Please do not order if you are not comfortable with the condition and character of old clothing. If damage or odor returns after washing or wearing, this will not be eligible for a refund or exchange. Returns and refunds are not accepted.
