Monpe are traditional Japanese work trousers, worn for farming and everyday labor. Their construction reflects not only the need to move, but also the care taken to keep clothing in use.

This striped cotton pair is estimated to date from the early to mid-Showa period. Its standout feature is a generous waist measuring approximately 92 cm / 36.2 inches around, unusually large for monpe of this era. Side slits separate the front and rear waist sections, which are secured with fabric ties.

Inside, both knees have an additional layer of fabric for double-knee reinforcement. A pocket is attached to the reinforcement on one side only, and a crotch gusset completes the construction. Beyond the stripes, the appeal lies in these details hidden within the garment.

Old Japanese workwear continues to draw interest from vintage enthusiasts in Europe and North America.
