In the 1920s, a Japanese gentleman stepping out in a tonbi mantle was making a statement that required no translation. The silhouette — a sweeping black wool cape over a structured inner vest, collar trimmed with real fur — announced that its wearer understood both the refinement of the West and the dignity of Japan. The tonbi was not an imitation of the Scottish Inverness coat. It was Japan's answer to it.

This piece dates to the 1920s–1930s. It is over 90 years old. It is still wearable. That alone places it among the rarest surviving examples of Taisho Modern outerwear.

• Fur collar shows areas of wear — natural for real fur of this age
• Buttons have been replaced at some point in the garment's history
