A furoshiki is a Japanese wrapping cloth traditionally used to carry, present, and store belongings. Its beauty lies not only in what it holds, but in the act of wrapping: spreading the cloth, bringing its corners together, and shaping it around an object.

This large cotton furoshiki is unused deadstock from around the mid-Showa period. Bands of fine cream and muted purple stripes cross its warm brown ground. Across its approximately 125 × 120 cm surface, the arrangement of stripes becomes visible when the cloth is opened; as it is folded or wrapped, different lines and colors come forward.

The cloth has not been washed. It retains the sheen and crisp, starched feel of unused fabric, a particularly valuable quality in a vintage piece. With washing and use, its texture may soften and develop character, but please read the condition notes below before deciding whether to wash it.

A white cloth panel for writing a name or address is attached to a corner on the reverse, a detail from the time when furoshiki were everyday belongings. A small remnant of what appears to be a price sticker also remains, another trace of its deadstock history.

Furoshiki still make sense in contemporary life. Wrap a gift, gather lightweight clothing, then fold the cloth away when it is not needed. Reusing one cloth for different purposes can also reduce reliance on disposable wrapping. The gestures of opening, folding, and tying the cloth are part of its distinctly Japanese appeal. Its stripes can also be enjoyed when the fabric is draped over a shelf or displayed. Japanese vintage textiles, including furoshiki, are appreciated by collectors and textile enthusiasts beyond Japan; this unused, period piece offers a particularly compelling connection to that history.

Condition

Unused deadstock, but a vintage textile that has been stored for many years. Part of the apparent price sticker remains. There is fabric slippage and a small hole. Washing or rinsing may weaken the old fabric, enlarge holes or damaged areas, or cause it to split or tear. Please order only if you understand and accept the condition of vintage fabric and the risks associated with washing it. Review the photographs carefully. The cloth will be compressed for shipping and may arrive creased.
