A haori is a traditional Japanese jacket, originally worn over kimono. Unlike a wrap-front kimono, it is an outer layer worn without an obi belt. Its open front, broad sleeves and straight-cut body offer a different silhouette from a Western jacket or cardigan.

Today, that shape works with clothes you already own. A grey hoodie. Dark trousers. A plain T-shirt and faded denim. Rather than building an outfit around traditional Japanese dress, start with your everyday clothes and add one distinctive piece.

QUIET COLOUR, ANYTHING BUT PLAIN

Estimated to date from the early–mid Showa period, this jacket has a deep colour somewhere between black and charcoal grey. It is not a flat, uniform black: fine grey-white stripes run closely across the dark ground, giving the fabric a quieter, more intricate character.

From a distance, the stripes blend into the overall shade. Up close, their fine lines and the fabric’s textured surface become part of the appeal.

At 98 cm long, the jacket creates an extended line through an outfit. The generous body and sleeves bring volume around the shoulders and arms, while the open front lets the layers underneath remain visible.

It offers something different from another conventional dark jacket: a familiar colour palette, with an unfamiliar shape.

THE LINING IS HALF THE REASON TO CHOOSE IT

Open the jacket and the precise stripes give way to something softer.

The cotton lining carries muted tones resembling grey, blue-green and light brown, arranged in gently wavering horizontal bands. Where the outside is fine and linear, the inside is hazy and expansive.
