A haori is a jacket worn over a kimono. It has long been loved as an outer garment for going out, worn on both formal occasions and in everyday outfits. In Japan, not so long ago, it was common to see a haori hanging by the front door of a home.

This haori was tailored by a specialist dealer in the late Showa era. The outer fabric is a calm, subdued woven cloth. But turn it inside out, and hand-painted style motifs are scattered across a pale ground — designs such as an old man's face. This lining, blurred and washed like a painting, is a face that belongs to this haori alone. This is a one-of-a-kind piece; only this single garment exists. Even in the overseas vintage market, demand for haori like this is high, and it is a category that draws attention from buyers in Europe and North America.

For styling, a mix of Japanese and Western elements works well. Simply layering it over a white T-shirt and black trousers, or over denim, adds the relaxed touch only a haori can give to an everyday outfit. Choose it in place of a tailored jacket, and you get an outfit where a sense of polish and ease coexist. Even if you are not familiar with wearing a kimono, you can take it in easily, the way you would a jacket.
