There was a time when indigo was woven into the fabric of everyday life in Japan.

Imagine stepping into a kimono on a cold morning, crossing the earthen floor of a home and opening the door to the day. By evening, its long hem would sway on the walk home before the garment was carefully folded away.

From the Taisho to early Showa period, clothing was worn for years, mended when needed and sometimes remade at home. This men’s nagagi, a long kimono robe, carries the character of that era.

Its cotton outer fabric is woven with fine stripes in deep indigo. From a distance, it appears almost solid; up close, the stripes and texture emerge as the light shifts.

The most striking part lies inside: a rich, clear expanse of solid indigo cotton. Even the lining, rarely seen by others, was made in this beautiful blue.

Its appeal is not in ornament, but in the colour and construction of the cloth. Today, it can be worn open over a white T-shirt and wide-leg trousers like a long coat. The generous sleeves and length give it a quiet presence in a modern wardrobe.

Condition

Loose stitching under the arm has caused the seam to open, forming a hole. The outer fabric and lining also show wrinkles, irregular threads, uneven colour and minor wear consistent with aged cloth. Please consider these characteristics when purchasing a vintage garment.

The garment will be folded and compressed for shipping, which may cause creases.

This is an old garment and may not be suitable for those seeking the condition of a new item. We have washed it twice, but it retains an odour characteristic of vintage clothing.
