Throw it over your usual T-shirt and jeans, and your whole look changes. That is the haori: Japan's traditional over-jacket, worn open over kimono. What makes this piece special is how naturally it works with the Western clothes you already own.

Its greatest appeal is the character of the outer fabric. Dating to approximately the 1970s–1980s, the outer layer is thought to be wool mixed with other fibers, woven with fine slub yarns running through a deep, subdued ground. Solid at first glance, yet never flat: as the light shifts, a quiet woven texture rises to the surface. This is the depth that Japanese woven cloth does so well. With no loud pattern to lean on, the fabric itself is the star.

White basting threads still remain along the collar lining and sleeves. Whether the jacket was ever worn is unknown, but these temporary tailoring stitches preserve the moment it left the maker's hands. Take out the basting, slip it on, and this haori's next chapter begins with you.

Wear it the classic way over kimono, or pair it with Western clothes and it looks remarkably sharp. A white T-shirt and denim; a shirt with slacks; a light outer layer over knitwear. In place of your usual jacket, it brings together a Japanese silhouette and a modern ease. A piece with the depth to suit both worlds.

Japanese vintage haori are drawing growing attention from vintage enthusiasts and fashion-forward buyers in Europe and North America. This is a one-of-a-kind piece that can never be restocked. In an age of fast fashion, we hope you will enjoy the beauty of a weave made nearly half a century ago, as part of your everyday wardrobe.

Styling

Classic over kimono, and just as at home as a light coat over Western clothes. Its substantial weave brings welcome warmth for the coming season. Even a simple white T-shirt and trousers look sharper the moment you throw it on.
