A men’s cotton haori jacket believed to date from the early to mid-Showa era. Fine stripes run across the deep indigo-dyed cotton, revealing layers of color and woven texture when viewed up close.

Years of wear have created fraying along parts of the front edges and sleeves, exposing brighter indigo beneath the darker surface. The variations in color, creases in the cloth, and placement of the wear give this one-of-a-kind garment a character that cannot be reproduced.

A New Shape for a Familiar Wardrobe

A haori is a traditional Japanese outer layer originally worn over a kimono. It does not, however, need to be reserved for traditional dress. Layer it over a T-shirt or shirt and pair it with denim or wide-leg trousers to bring a different shape and cultural perspective into an everyday wardrobe.

Its straight construction, open sleeves, and 95 cm length create a silhouette unlike that of a conventional jacket or coat. Rather than adding another familiar shape to your wardrobe, this haori offers a way to interpret a garment from another time and culture through your own style.

A gray haori cord is included. Wear the jacket open to emphasize the natural drape of the cotton, or tie the cord to subtly reshape the front.

Condition

The outer fabric shows age-related wear and fraying. Along parts of the front edges and sleeves, brighter indigo is visible beneath the worn surface.

The lining has stains, discoloration, and some tears. Please review all photographs carefully. This garment is recommended for those who appreciate the individual wear and character of vintage clothing.

Only the haori jacket and its cord are included. Other garments and accessories shown in the model photographs are not included.

The garment has been washed, but it retains an odor associated with older textiles. It will be compressed for shipping and may arrive creased. Damage or the return of odors resulting from washing or wearing after delivery is not eligible for a refund or exchange.
