Kasuri is a traditional Japanese weaving technique in which threads are dyed before they are woven, creating softly blurred patterns that machine printing can never replicate.

This is a mid-Showa era (around the 1950s–60s) cotton nagagi, a full-length Japanese kimono robe, with white kasuri patterns across a deep indigo ground. It was tailored as everyday wear and was worn in the rhythm of daily life.

Its greatest charm is the lining: vintage tenugui, the multipurpose cotton cloths of Japanese daily life, repurposed as the robe's inner fabric. It is a quiet record of the wisdom of using every piece of cloth to its fullest.

Japanese vintage textiles are drawing growing attention, especially in the US and Europe, where the blurred beauty of kasuri is valued as something mass production can never offer.

This nagagi was tailored as women's wear, shown by the miyatsuguchi, the open slits under the arms found on traditional Japanese garments, but its generous cut also works well for men.

Throw it over a T-shirt and trousers, and it wears like a long, lightweight coat. The sway of the hem and the glimpse of the tenugui lining make even a familiar outfit feel a little different.

Condition

There is yellowing and discoloration on the white kasuri areas, and some stitching is missing at the miyatsuguchi (the underarm openings).

The piece has been washed by us, though a scent typical of vintage textiles may remain. It will be shipped folded and compressed, so wrinkles may occur. Damage or returning odors resulting from washing or wearing after purchase are not eligible for refunds or exchanges.
