What Are Mompe?

Mompe are traditional Japanese work trousers worn by rural women, particularly in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions, for farming and daily life. Crafted from sturdy cotton or linen, their relaxed silhouette and tapered ankles were designed for ease of movement in the fields. During wartime, mompe spread across the entire country, becoming deeply woven into the fabric of Showa-era Japanese life — a true folk garment that tells the story of how people lived, worked, and endured.

For those drawn to Japanese workwear and boro aesthetics, mompe occupy the same cultural space as noragi jackets — garments born from necessity, shaped by the land, and now recognized worldwide as icons of slow fashion and Japanese craft heritage.

About This Piece

This is not a typical mompe. Several different kasuri (ikat-woven) cotton fabrics have been combined into a bold crazy patchwork construction — each panel carrying its own distinct indigo pattern, from dot motifs to grid and cross kasuri. The result is a one-of-a-kind garment that could never be replicated by mass production.

Reinforcing patches have been hand-stitched across the thighs, knees, and hip — not to hide wear, but to extend the life of a garment that was genuinely loved and used. Turn it inside out and you'll find the hand stitching itself is a quiet work of art.

Most remarkably, this mompe features NKK brass side zippers on both sides — an extremely rare detail that suggests the maker had knowledge of Western tailoring. Someone took a traditional folk garment and made it their own. That ingenuity, that personal touch, is what makes this piece so dramatically compelling.

The depth of the indigo — softened and deepened by years of wear and washing — cannot be manufactured. It is the color of time itself.
