Noragi — Japanese farmer's work jackets — are disappearing. With each passing decade, fewer survive. Worn hard in the fields, mended, patched, and worn again until there was nothing left, only a handful have made it to the present day. This is one of them.

In recent years, interest in Japan Vintage has surged across Europe and North America. Among all Japanese workwear, noragi have emerged as some of the most sought-after pieces — celebrated by collectors and buyers worldwide for their folk craft beauty, the traces of hand labor woven into every thread, and what they represent: a culture that used things fully, repaired them faithfully, and never threw anything away. As the world pushes back against fast fashion, the demand for pieces with this kind of depth and history will only grow.

This particular piece was found in Tohoku, northeastern Japan. It is a striped cotton noragi from the early to mid Showa era — and at some point, its length was cut short. Not tailored. Not reformed. Just cut. Raw and unfinished, exactly as it was left.

That act of cutting — whoever did it, whenever it happened — is what makes this piece unrepeatable. The collar is made from a different patterned fabric, a quiet testament to the practicality and resourcefulness of the era. The rough hem, the worn cotton, the layered history: this is the piece as it exists today.

A single bolt of cloth, born in the fields of Tohoku, carried through decades of daily life, cut by an unknown hand — and still here.

Its story continues with whoever holds it next.
