This noragi from Tohoku was sewn by hand — most likely in the early-to-mid Showa era — by someone in a farming household, for their own use on their own land. Not a craftsman. Not a workshop. An ordinary person, making what they needed.

This piece is constructed as a lined hitoe — a single-layer garment with no wadding or padding between the shell and lining. The lining softens the feel against the skin and helps the garment hold its shape, while the absence of filling keeps it light and breathable. The shorter sleeve length keeps the cuffs clear when the arms are in motion. In modern life, it works just as well thrown over a tee on a summer day, or as a layer against over-air-conditioned rooms.

In the West, workwear such as the French moleskin jacket or the American chore coat have long been celebrated as vintage collectibles — garments that carried the weight of real labor. Japanese noragi belongs in the same conversation, and collectors and slow fashion advocates around the world are beginning to recognize it.

But there is a fundamental difference. Western workwear was largely produced in factories, in volume. Noragi was sewn at home, by hand, for one body, on one piece of land. The indigo kasuri weave — threads resist-dyed before weaving to create the characteristic blurred, cloud-like pattern — was the everyday fabric of rural Japan. Not special. Not decorative. Just what was available, and what worked.

No two are alike. This one will not come around again.

It existed long before the word "fast fashion" was coined.
