A noragi work jacket tailored in the early Showa era.
The dark-toned stripe pattern gives this piece a composed, understated presence. What sets it apart is the use of a blended weave fabric — relatively uncommon for workwear of the period. A subtle sheen distinguishes it from plain cotton, quietly reflecting the material shifts of its time.
The construction is entirely hand-stitched. The uneven rhythm of the needle work and the gentle irregularities in the seams speak to a garment made in daily life, worn in daily life — not produced, but crafted.
This particular piece was found in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, where harsh winters and demanding rural conditions shaped the way clothing was made and used. It carries that history in its fabric.
In recent years, noragi and antique Japanese textiles have gained significant recognition internationally — valued not only as garments, but as symbols of slow fashion and sustainable living. Unlike mass-produced clothing, these pieces were made with time, worn with purpose, and passed down with care. That ethos aligns naturally with the values of those who seek meaning in what they wear.
The character of a blended weave noragi is distinct from pure cotton — not simply a material difference, but a reflection of a specific moment in time, when tradition and change met in everyday dress.
Today, this jacket pairs naturally with T-shirts, denim, or relaxed contemporary styling. Worn as a daily layer, it becomes a quiet bridge between past and present.
Recommended not only as a wearable garment, but also as remake fabric or a reference piece for textile research.
