A padded hanten is a traditional Japanese cold-weather garment created for everyday life during the colder months.

This example dates to around the early Showa period. Fine kasuri motifs resembling igeta, the traditional Japanese well-frame pattern, are woven into a bold checkerboard of deep indigo and white.

From a distance, the pattern reads as a striking grid. Up close, the softly blurred edges created by the slight displacement of the dyed threads become visible. Structured yet never perfectly uniform, this natural variation gives the old cotton its depth and character.

The interior is lined with plain cotton and the body is padded with cotton filling. It has a long body and shorter sleeves. The hem reaches approximately knee level, allowing it to be worn today as a long padded jacket.

Once used as practical winter clothing in Japan, padded hanten are now receiving growing attention in vintage markets across Europe and North America. Worn, damaged, and kept in use rather than discarded, garments like this stand in direct opposition to fast fashion.
