■Product Details■
- Era: Mid-Showa period (circa 1950s–60s)
- Material: Cotton
This is a vintage zoukin—a hand-stitched cleaning cloth used in everyday life during Japan’s mid-Showa era.
In that time, it was common to mend, patch, and continue using cloth until it could no longer serve any purpose.
This piece is made from indigo-dyed kasuri cotton and reinforced with sashiko stitching. It is a work that reflects the full “life of cloth.”
With a size of approximately 33cm × 51.5cm (13" × 20.3"), it is slightly larger than a typical cloth.
Although it no longer serves a practical purpose, its presence and character make it ideal for display as an interior textile or framed as art.
You can also repurpose it into small handmade items such as pouches or covers, giving the fabric new life.
The visible patchwork, damage, and the softly bleeding indigo tones bring warmth and quiet strength—something machines cannot replicate.
This piece embodies the now-rare philosophy of using cloth to its very end.
Hold it in your hands, close your eyes, and imagine the everyday life it once witnessed.
