A small piece of Showa-era shop culture, printed on a practical Japanese cloth.

This vintage Japanese tenugui, a thin cotton hand towel traditionally used in everyday life, dates from the 1980s. It was originally produced as a novelty item for a local Japanese alcohol and grocery store.

The bold kanji characters and folding-fan motif capture the visual energy of Showa-era commercial textiles. This is the kind of cloth that connected a neighbourhood shop with its customers, making an ordinary useful object part of local history.

Use it as a hand towel, display it as a small textile artwork, or incorporate it into a handmade or upcycling project. Its compact 87 × 33 cm size makes it easy to use in a home, studio, shop display, or creative work.

Japanese vintage tenugui are increasingly appreciated by overseas collectors, designers, and makers for their practical beauty, cultural context, and one-of-a-kind printed character. Once sold, this individual piece will not be available again.
