This mid-Showa Japanese furoshiki was made as a commemorative gift for employees and their families by Tohoku Electric Power Company. The company name turns an everyday wrapping cloth into a small document of postwar Japanese working life, with a specific organization and occasion preserved in the fabric.

The cotton is coarse and rustic, with subdued colouring that carries the atmosphere of the period. Corporate-logo textiles like this were made for use, not for an international collectors’ market, which is why surviving examples are becoming harder to find.

At approximately 79 × 76 cm, it is a practical medium-sized cloth for wrapping, carrying a lunch box, or using as a reusable alternative to disposable bags.
