The umanori-bakama (horse-riding hakama) is a traditional type of divided trousers originally worn by samurai when riding horses. Its split-leg construction was designed to allow for ease of movement.

This practical design was passed down through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods and became common workwear for ordinary people. In particular, in rural areas and among craftsmen, indigo-dyed hemp hakama were cherished as cool summer clothing.

This item is an authentic umanori-bakama from the Taisho to early Showa period.

The natural indigo color and the softened texture of the hemp, developed over years of use, convey the warmth of past daily life and human hands.

The unique fabric texture created by repeated washing and wear shows a depth that cannot be achieved with new fabric.

If the size fits, it can be worn as-is or layered over leggings or similar garments.

The back panel contains a material that feels like thick cardboard, which is curved and has been restitched around the edges. There is a camphor scent present (traditional moth repellent). This is a vintage item, so please refrain from purchasing if you do not understand the nature of antique goods.
