Travelers in Edo and Meiji Japan wore Dochu Kappa as rain capes for long journeys on foot — over mountain passes, through weather, between towns. They were purely functional objects, used until worn out, then repaired, then repurposed as rags or patching material. Almost none survived intact. This one did.

The indigo is deep and the kasuri pattern is sharp — the kind of dye depth and ikat clarity that requires both skill in the dyeing and luck in the preservation. Specialists in Japanese antique textiles regard pieces like this as genuinely rare. Collectors in Europe and North America have been seeking them for years. This is one piece.
