A civilian tailor made these in Japan sometime in the 1940s or 1950s — the exact year is unrecoverable, and that uncertainty is part of what makes the piece interesting. The button-fly, the wool body, the pocket lining replaced at some later point with a modern dotted fabric: each layer tells a different chapter. The machine-stitched repairs scattered throughout are not flaws. They are evidence of a garment that was valued enough to be mended, repeatedly, across decades.

Japan in the years bridging wartime and postwar recovery produced clothing under conditions of scarcity that shaped every decision. What a tailor chose to make, and how they chose to fix it when it broke, carried weight that factory production never could. These trousers carry that weight.
