This cotton jacket was manufactured by YAMAKO in the 1950s–60s, crafted from traditional Bingo Kasuri fabric. Before the war, most Japanese clothing was sewn at home by hand. It was only after postwar reconstruction that companies began producing garments at scale — and this jacket stands as a rare artifact from that very dawn of Japanese ready-to-wear.

The cuffs are elasticated for a comfortable fit, and a single pocket sits at the hem — its shape is charming and distinctive. The overall silhouette is wonderfully endearing, making this piece just as suited for display as it is for wearing.

The fabric is a traditional Bingo Kasuri — a hand-woven ikat textile originating from the Fukuyama region of Hiroshima Prefecture. The indigo base is punctuated by white, red, and yellow kasuri patterns, carrying forward the aesthetic sensibility of kimono and noragi workwear culture.

Thanks to its lightweight cotton construction, this piece sits somewhere between a shirt and a jacket — closer to what we'd call a shirt jacket today. It works beautifully as a light layer, worn open over a tee, or buttoned up on its own. Ideal for transitional seasons and layered styling.

Indigo-dyed kasuri fabric is virtually nonexistent in modern ready-to-wear. That's what makes this jacket truly one of a kind — a wearable record of craftsmanship and a time that no longer exists.
